Finding the Perfect Work-Life Balance: Still possible?

These days ehn, with the whole gig economy thing and people having to take on multiple jobs just to make ends meet, the concept of work-life balance often feels like an elusive dream. Between demanding work schedules, social obligations, and the pursuit of personal passions, upskilling, and networking, finding the right balance can seem overwhelming. However, achieving this balance is not just possible—it’s essential for your mental and physical health, as well as your overall happiness. And if there’s one thing you can hold as fact about me, I always want to maximize the happiness. So…let’s get into it.

Work-Life Balance

Work-life balance is not about dividing your time equally between work and personal life. Instead, it’s about finding the right equilibrium that allows you to meet your professional goals while also enjoying your personal time. This balance looks different for everyone, depending on individual priorities, career demands, and personal circumstances. But to thrive, find a way that suits your particular circumstances.

Why Work-Life Balance Matters

1. Mental Health: Constantly being on the go without taking time to recharge can lead to burnout, stress, and anxiety. If you live in Lagos and commute anything over 40 minutes to and from work every day, sorry o. Try to find a balance though, because work-life balance allows you to unwind, relax, and take care of your mental well-being. This is extra important if you suffer from any mental illness.

2. Improved Relationships: When you’re constantly working, personal relationships can suffer. Making time for loved ones strengthens bonds and leads to a more fulfilling personal life.

3. Increased Productivity: Ironically, taking breaks and having a balanced lifestyle can actually make you more productive. A rested mind is more creative and focused.

4. Physical Health: Overworking can take a toll on your physical health. Prioritizing activities like exercise, sleep, and healthy eating helps maintain a healthy body.

Tips for Achieving Work-Life Balance

Caveat: I cannot say that I am where I want to be when it comes to work-life balance, but I am not where I used to be a couple of years ago.

1. Set Boundaries: Clearly define your work hours and stick to them. Avoid checking emails or taking work calls during personal time. I have accepted that some employers simply don’t understand work hours and personal time (or they pretend not to). You must be the enforcer of these boundaries. What I did was I made sure that my free days with every gig includes one day. So that day is 100% mine. I understand that in some lines of work, this is a luxury. But if it is possible to not let your hustle fill up the whole week, do that.

2. Prioritize Tasks: Use tools like to-do lists or task management apps to prioritize tasks. Focus on what’s important and learn to delegate or say no when necessary. If you are in no position to delegate, but you have too much to do (especially when meeting expectations means you must work outside the hours you are paid for, ask your superior for a reasonable timeline. Remember that you are more important to your loved ones than to your employer.

3. Unplug Regularly: Take time away from screens. Whether it’s a weekend getaway, a walk in nature, or simply a tech-free evening, disconnect to reconnect with yourself. In a couple of weeks, I will be taking a whole weekend off to spend time with my friends in a very calm village on the outskirts of Lagos. I do this once (almost) every year. I need to feel like a human being. A person who is loved and who can exist outside of screens and with love.

4. Invest in Hobbies: Engage in activities that bring you joy outside of work. I dance for fun, climb hills when I’m in the south western towns I’m familiar with, and I play scrabble if I have others who can play around. You can knit, or crochet or whatever helps you destress.

5. Practice Self-Care: Make time for self-care practices, such as meditation, haircare, pedicure, spa day or even just a long bath. Taking care of yourself is not a luxury, but a necessity. TBH, I don’t do a lot of this, but I’ve noticed I feel better when I do. So I will encourage you to do that a lot more.

Conclusion

Work-life balance is not a one-size-fits-all solution; it’s a personal journey that evolves with time. By taking conscious steps to prioritize your well-being, you can achieve a balance that leads to a happier, healthier, and more fulfilling life. Remember, life is not just about work—it’s about living fully and enjoying every moment.
